Hansode Shiranui (不知火 半袖, Shiranui Hansode) is a freshman and later junior of Class -13, originally of Class 1, and Zenkichi Hitoyoshi's best friend. She is the granddaughter of Hakama Shiranui. A member of the Shiranui Household, Shiranui serves as Medaka Kurokami's double until the end of the Jet Black Wedding Feast, after which she is chosen to become the next Iihiko Shishime.
Shiranui is normally a very cheerful and hyper girl, but she has been shown to have a dark side and is brutally tactless. Despite her small size Shiranui has a very large appetite and is constantly seen eating, even while walking. She has a knack for finding clandestine information with ease, knowing about most things that would seem to be vague details, and is unusually perceptive. Shiranui harbors a hidden resentment against Medaka. Because of the antagonism that exists between them, Medaka initially asks Shiranui to become the Vice-President of the Student Council, though Shiranui refuses. While she prefers remaining on the sidelines observing and is extraordinarily capable of removing herself from any danger, Shiranui elects to join Class -13 after encountering Misogi Kumagawa. Like the other Minuses, she claims she has no friends and does not desire them. Despite her claims to not care for anyone, it seems that she has feelings for Zenkichi (stated after Zenkichi commented on her "devouring" people she said says she could never devour someone like him because "she could never stomach something so sweet"); she has stated that she had joined Class -13 partly out of motivation to see how far Zenkichi is willing to go to remain friends with her. Though she now opposes the Student Council, she does help them at times (albeit indirectly).
When Shiranui finishes her job as Medaka's double, she reveals her true nature. Shiranui ate all the time because Medaka could not, and befriended Zenkichi because Medaka could not. In actuality, Shiranui is quite reserved. She eats modestly, is respectful of her elders, and has a more serious nature.
Shiranui has blue eyes (her eye sight is 1.5 by 1.5) and blue hair, with a curled ahoge on top of her head. Despite being in high school, Shiranui has a very childish appearance, and is one of the shortest characters at the academy. She wears the standard girl's uniform of Hakoniwa Academy. When dressed casually, Shiranui wears a hooded jacket. At the Seiyasai, Shiranui wears a long-sleeved version of her regular uniform. During the Jet Black Wedding Feast, Shiranui wears a hooded jacket and overalls. After leaving the academy, Shiranui initially wears a kimono, though after receiving her new assignment, changes into a knee-length pink dress. The dress has short sleeves and a red ribbon at the collar. Upon returning to the academy, Shiranui dons the women's uniform once more. Ten years later, Shiranui is physically unchanged, thought she now wears a dark-colored jacket with a black scarf and matching skirt.
When she is possessed by Iihiko, Shiranui remains mostly the same appearance-wise, though she inherits some of Iihiko's physical features. The sclera of her eyes turn red, her ears grow longer and become pointed, her canines turn into fangs, and she grows a small pair of blood-red horns from her head. Her fingers grow longer and become clawed, and her hands are covered in a dark substance that reaches past her wrists.
When Medaka entered Hakoniwa Academy, Kajiki Kurokami sent in Shiranui to act as Medaka's double without Medaka's approval. As Medaka's "ghost support", Shiranui's assignment was to help Medaka from behind the scenes, doing the things Medaka could not. Shiranui first met Zenkichi when she intentionally dropped her eraser in front of him, planning to become friends with him to get closer to Medaka. Shiranui was eating out of a boxed lunch since first period; upon finishing that one, she took out another, and would have another five or six before an onigiri for dessert. Shiranui paused in her eating when she noticed Zenkichi watching her. She then dropped her eraser while having a rice ball. With Zenkichi's accompanying reaction to picking up her eraser, Shiranui first dropped her rice ball in surprise, then burst out laughing. Telling "Erase Man" he was funny, she introduced herself.
Student Council Executive Arc
Shiranui is present at Medaka's inauguration ceremony. Later, she discusses Medaka's recent election with Zenkichi, with the former admitting that even she voted for the "little princess". The two discuss Medaka's numerous achievements, before Shiranui asks Zenkichi if he plans to join the Student Council. Zenkichi adamantly insists that he won't, only for Medaka to appear behind him and drag him off. When Habataki Hyūga questions Zenkichi's whereabouts, Shiranui tells him that he was already caught by the president, and goes on to describe Medaka and Zenkichi's relationship to Hyūga. The next day, as Shiranui has lunch with Zenkichi, she comments on how only he is dragged along with Medaka on her tasks. Zenkichi goes on to explain more about Medaka's personality, but when he declares that the job is finished, Shiranui comments that he doesn't really understand Medaka, as she won't stop until she reforms the Kendo Club. When Zenkichi hears complaining about the club from behind him, he turns around only to find no one there. Shiranui tells him Hyūga was just sitting there. She also tells him that after the recruitment meeting later in the day, Zenkichi won't have to worry as the Student Council positions will be filled. Shiranui later approaches Medaka and tells her that the one who left the request to clear the kendo hall was Hyūga, who possesses national level kendo skills, but has a bad personality and was violent all throughout middle school. Medaka tells her that it doesn't matter to her who sent in the request, to which Shiranui replies that she has a request of her own that she would like fulfilled. Later, she is seen filling in for Medaka (unsuccessfully) at the recruitment meeting.
A week later, it is Shiranui's information that allows Zenkichi to track down Isagi Isahaya as the most likely suspect in the attack on Aria Ariake. When Zenkichi questions where she gets her information from, Shiranui tells him he's better off not knowing. When Medaka confronts Isahaya directly, Shiranui falls on the ground laughing. When Isahaya runs away, Shiranui points it out, and also asks Zenkichi why he is wearing his jersey under his uniform, telling him it looks weird. After everyone else runs off, Shiranui goes home.
When Zenkichi takes a request to find a lost puppy, he brings Shiranui along with him in Medaka's abscense. Shiranui expresses her surprise that even the "invincible" Medaka has a weak point, Zenkichi tells her that she had a rather traumatic incident in the past with the primary school class pet. When Shiranui asks if that could undermine Medaka's presidency, Zenkichi reminds her that that is where he comes in. He then tells her to lead the way. Shiranui tells him she heard about a dog living on campus, and leads him to a fully grown canine, which closely resembles a wolf. When Zenkichi tries to insist it can't be the dog they're looking for, Shiranui tells him it is an adult Borzoi, also known as the Russian Wolf-Hound. A horrified Zenkichi asks if she is going to help him, only to be told by Shiranui that she just came to watch him get mauled. She then hands him sasuages to use in an "internal organs" joke; which Zenkichi unfortunately fulfills when he tries to unsuccessfully capture the dog. Shiranui is delighted. The next day, when Medaka joins the pair in her dog costume, Shiranui and Zenkichi both agree that though her logic is sound, her method is ridiculous. As Medaka approaches the dog, Shiranui remarks that Medaka is much more human than she expected, getting jealous, acting stupid, and having a problem with animals. Zenkichi corrects her, telling her that it's actually the animals that have a problem with Medaka: because of her overwhelming presence, all animals are terrified of her.
At a later date, while having lunch with Zenkichi and Hyūga, she listens as the two discuss Zenkichi's recent systematic visiting of all the clubs. When questioned by Hyūga why he would do such a thing, Zenkichi replies that it is his policy to sweat five liters a day. Shiranui agrees with him, stating that it is her policy to drink five liters of ramen a day. Hyūga mentions Zenkichi's recent status as the Student Council's "Club Typhoon", and that he should probably stop visiting all the clubs as he still hasn't joined one. Zenkichi replies that is fine, as he intended to make a name for himself anyway. Hearing this, Hisshuu Kanoya approaches him and asks to talk. When Hyūga asks Shiranui if it was alright to let Zenkichi leave with such a scary person, Shiranui replies that it is fine, and that she is only an acquaintance of Zenkichi. Hyūga comments that while he is quite scary himself, Shiranui is definitely the worst of all of them. Shiranui then tells him that Kanoya was a former candidate to be president, but was beaten to a pulp by Medaka when he started using vicious methods to get votes. She notes that he probably has some plan for revenge, and is then to find that Zenkichi has not yet visited the Judo Club, despite claiming to have visited all of them. After his match with Kouki Akune, Zenkichi tells Shiranui about what happened at the Judo Club. She tells him he should have come to her for help, though he questions what she could have done. When the two enter the Student Council room, they find a nearly naked Akune changing, much to Shiranui's delight.
A month after Medaka's inauguration, Shiranui and Zenkichi discuss Kenna Yatsushiro at lunch. Shiranui describes her as rougher than the guys, and that she excels at everything she does, though Zenkichi thinks it sounds more like she excels at her own stupidity. Shrianui questions why Medaka would hand the request over to Akune, when she could do it better herself. Zenkichi tells her that it is both to get Akune experience, as well as determine whether or not Yatsushiro deserves help.
When the Student Council is unsuccessfully trying to find a model for Kizashi Yuubaru, Shiranui arrives at the Art Club room looking for Zenkichi. Yuubaru is awestruck, and decides that she is the perfect model he has been looking for, much to everyone's shock. After he explains that Shiranui is perfect because her body is underdeveloped, the other three girls get depressed. Shiranui doesn't understand what is going on, but is happy that she "won", though Zenkichi tells her that she actually lost on all accounts. Shiranui later gets paid five dollars for being Yuubaru's model.
When Zenkichi tells her at lunch that the Student Council will be using a club battle swim meet to decide which club should get funding, she points out that such an event seems to be in the Swimming Club's favor. She begins acting smug after hearing Zenkichi's explanation, and points out that any event in the water can't be called fair, because there are three members of the Swimming Club who are very pushy when it comes to money. When Zenkichi presses her to tell him what she means, she coolly tells him to ask her in a more polite manner, other members of their class comment that the pair have a sick way of getting along. She then tells him about how the members in particular will do anything for money; in fact, will only do something if it is for money. She then warns Zenkichi to be careful, as even if Medaka is invincible, it doesn't mean she can't lose.
On Sunday, Shiranui is revealed to be hosting the swim meet along with Tanzaku Aso. When Aso asks her how she met Zenkichi, Shiranui tells her that they went to different middle schools, and met for the first time in April, when Zenkichi picked up an eraser she dropped. Aso is unimpressed, and Zenkichi's thoughts upon hearing the story imply it to be, if not a lie, than only half the truth. She and Aso discuss the first event, with Shiranui deciding that the Basketball Club has the advantage. Aso is surprised by Shiranui's logical analysis, and Shiranui tells the older girl that she is here to work, as she is getting paid in food. She goes on to say that there is a certain technique required for water basketball, though not too many people know it, and that this is why she warned the participants that the problem isn't just with getting the ball in the basket. As the participants struggle to score points, Shiranui laughs heartily watching the students floundering about. When Aso expresses her amazement at Medaka's shot, Shiranui corrects her, explaining that that is actually the right way to do it. Because she announces it over the microphone though, everyone hears it, and all the students begin to frantically try to mimic Medaka's technique.
Asked by Aso what she thinks of the second event, Shiranui replies it's so stupid it's great. She then gets serious and recognizes that logically, the Track Team should win. Even so, she's going to put her money on the Swimming Club and the Student Council. Shiranui is highly amused as Zenkichi and Akune fight each other while running to the finish line. When Aso is surprised that the Swimming Club is in last place, Shiranui explains that even an all rounder like Umumichi Yakushima would need about twenty-five meters to match Sotsu Tanegashima's speed. When Yakushima and Tanegashima begin swimming with their legs tied together, Shiranui is the only one not surprised. She then goes on to explain that Tanegashima is the fastest in the swimming world, and that Yakushima should be praised for keeping up with him. When Aso cannot decide what the final event should be, she asks for Shiranui's input, who decides on the final event herself.
As the final event begins, Aso addresses the assembled clubs, before turning the explanation of the challenge over to Shiranui. She explains that the challenge is a regular cavalry battle: two team members hold up the third, who is wearing a headband. If the headband is taken or the person wearing it falls in the water, then the team losses. However, to give the teams with fewer points a chance, Shiranui throws in an extra rule: points are given out based on the quality of headband stolen. The first place team's head band is worth sixteen points; second place's is worth fifteen, and so on. After hearing Shiranui's explanation, Aso exclaims that the higher ranking teams will be targeted by everyone else, to which Shiranui agrees. Zenkichi, proud of how his friend Shiranui is stirring the competition up, shouts "I love you Shiranui!" to which Shiranui replies "Yay! I love me some me too!", as onlookers think that it's disgusting how well the two of them get along. When the Swimming Club and the Student Council clash, Aso asks Shiranui how evenly matched the two factions are. Shiranui replies that while Medaka is stronger than Mogana Kikaijima, Tanegashima and Yakushima have better teamwork than Zenkichi and Akune. When Aso expresses her amazement at seeing Medaka seemingly stand on water, Shiranui is seen eating without expression. Shiranui tells Aso after both Medaka and Kikaijima go into the water, that because Medaka technically did not fall into the water before taking Kikaijima's headband, the Student Council just scored sixteen points. When Aso reveals how the Judo Club won the competition, Shianui is seen grinning wickedly.
When Zenkichi and Kikaijima are both praying for somebody to come and break the tense mood between the two of them, Shiranui barges into the Student Council room, telling Zenkichi she felt as if he was calling for her, and asking if he has something good for her to eat. Shiranui greets Kikaijima, introducing herself to the Student Council's new member. She then offers Kikaijima a photo of her kiss with Medaka, breaking the fourth wall to mention that it took up a whole panel the week prior, much to Kikaijima's dismay. As Kikaijima tries to take it, Shiranui offers it her, explaining that she actually took it for the school newspaper, but if Kikaijima asks, Shiranui will give it to her. She then maliciously reveals that she took three hundred photos, all from different angles, and asks Kikaijima which one she would like. Zenkichi interrupts her however, asking her not to tease the new member so much; he promises to buy her something good to eat later, and asks her to leave. Shiranui agrees, and leaves with an empty apology to Kikaijima and a farewell to Zenkichi.
When Harigane Onigase of the Public Morals Committee is forced to wear Medaka's uniform (much to her displeasure), Shiranui asks Zenkichi how bad someone needs to be before retribution hits them like that. Zenkichi simply tells her that she tried to fool Medaka into changing her uniform the day before. The next day, Shiranui is seen walking around school with Zenkichi, bags of food in her hands. While the two debate what to eat after school, they run into Onigase, who chastises Shiranui for eating in the halls. Shiranui swallows all of the food, much to Onigase's ire. When Onigase goes after Shiranui, Shiranui pushes Zenkichi on top of her, before giving the other girl a brief warning and running off.
Shiranui is wandering the halls, when she runs into Medaka dressed in a band uniform. They discuss the Orchestra and its captain, before the conversation turns to the other members of the Student Council. Shiranui asks who the vice-president will be, to which Medaka replies that she wants Shiranui to take the position. Shiranui laughs at the offer, reminding Medaka that she hates both group activities and Medaka herself. The two then meet Onigase. When the three arrive at the music room, they find the members of the Orchestra scattered about in a comatose heap, with a bloodied Myouri Unzen standing in the center of the carnage. Shiranui tells Medaka how Unzen is a superhuman just like her, and that ever since he took charge of the Public Morals Committee the organization became much more violent.
Medaka tells Shiranui she is leaving things in her hands. When Shiranui questions what she means, Medaka explains that she is leaving. When Unzen tries to pursue Medaka, Shiranui blocks his way, stating that he can't attack her because she hasn't broken any rules. When Onigase backs up her claim, Shiranui is seen smiling. After seeing Unzen destroy his phone, Shiranui is stunned. After blowing a hole in the wall, Unzen asks Shiranui if she is going to try and stop him from leaving. She sheepishly replies in the negative. After Medaka finishes her fight with Unzen, Shiranui is seen eating with her grandfather. When he asks her what he should do about Unzen's defeat, she recommends he drop a note in the suggestion box.
Thirteen Party Arc
After overhearing him discuss the Flask Plan, Shiranui approaches Unzen with Zenkichi. As Unzen describes his sister, Myouga Unzen, Shiranui looks oblivious. Shiranui listens without comment as Unzen continues to describe his sister, quietly eating her food. Shiranui follows Zenkichi as he searches for Medaka, munching on a donut. When Zenkichi asks her if she knows anything about the Flask Plan, she reminds him that she is just one of the chairman's many grandchildren. When Oudo Miyakonojou appears, Shiranui instantly escapes without trying to make the situation any worse for Zenkichi, signaling to him how dangerous Oudo is.
Shiranui eavesdrops on Medaka and Zenkichi as they prepare to invade the Flask Plan labs. Akune reveals that she then informed both him and Kikaijima about the Flask Plan, an action that surprises Zenkichi. After the Student Council invades the Flask Plan labs, Shiranui is seen eating in Hakama's office. When Hakama asks Shiranui if she is planning anything (for bringing Akune and Kikaijima to the Flask Plan), she denies the accusation. Shiranui warns Hakama not to ignore Akune and Kikaijima in favor of Medaka, as one of Medaka's greatest assets is her authority over those around her. For that same reason, Shiranui can't stand her. Hakama chuckles, remarking that it is rare for Shiranui to give him a warning. After listening to her grandfather describe the Abnormals, Shiranui asks who is waiting for Medaka's group on the next floor. After Hakama has the file on Kei Munakata gotten rid off, Shiranui wonders if that was the right thing to do without consulting Munakata himself first. When Hakama expresses his amazement at Zenkichi's exploits, Shiranui reiterates that Zenkichi is just a Normal, as well her friend. She immediately denies this claim however, stating she has no friends, nor does she want any. Claiming to be both full and bored, she leaves the office, telling Hakama that she is going out for a stroll to help her food digest. In reality, Shiranui posts a tweet stating: "The Student Council is in trouble, some members are hurt." Most of the student body follows Shiranui's Twitter page, though only six show up to help the Student Council, in the form of the Loser Team. While Medaka and company prepare to descend to the thirteenth floor, Shiranui eats a doughnut outside of the clock tower.
Kumagawa Incident Arc
Shiranui is eating donuts outside of Hakama's office when Misogi Kumagawa exits. She tells him it is their first time meeting, and asks him not to disturb her while she is eating. Shiranui warns Kumagawa that Hakoniwa is her mess room, and that if he tries to steal food, she will devour him. She tells Kumagawa that there is no one who looks like either of them, and that she is in Class 1, though her grandfather originally looked at her as the foundation for Class -13. After Kumagawa leaves, Shiranui is phoned by Zenkichi. He warns her about Kumagawa and thanks her for getting the Loser Team together. She laughs at his thanks, and hangs up on him. Shiranui then enters Hakama's office, asking her grandfather to let her into Class -13.
In Class 13's junior classroom (Class -13's temporary headquarters), Shiranui participates in the students' cellphone conference. She describes the two students of Class 13 attending the school. After Kuudou Hinokage appears behind and attacks Kumagawa, Shiranui explains that Hinokage can fight an army by himself. Shiranui arrives in person for the executives' meeting of Class 13. She is attacked by both Shibuki Shibushi and Gagamaru Chougasaki for talking big after showing up late. However, she is shown still eating, unscathed. She then proceeds to explain her plan for dealing with both the Student Council and Class 13. After finishing, the others are all impressed, though Shibushi asks if it is alright, as she has a friend in the Student Council. Shiranui claims it is a test to see how long he stays her friend. One week later, at the end of the semester, Shiranui and the other students of Class -13 show up with Kumagawa as part of his new Student Council. When Medaka manages to turn the situation around, Kumagawa asks Shiranui if this was expected. After Medaka declares a Student Council battle with Kumagawa, Shiranui heads to the cafeteria to eat. She is confronted by Zenkichi, who she gleefully tells that she is acting of her own free will. She is surprised by how well he takes this admission, and afterward thinks to herself that Zenkichi is too sweet to swallow. After the General Affairs Manager's Battle, Shiranui calls Medaka to tell her that Kumagawa is trying to recruit her sister. She convinces Medaka to intervene.
After the Treasurer's Battle, Shiranui approaches Hinokage. She asks him to participate in the Vice-President's Battle, but a distraught Hinokage laments that his Abnormality has already lost to a Minus. Shiranui leans over him however, saying she will "lend" him her own skill, and reveals her Real Eater. On August fifteenth, Shiranui watches the Vice-President's Battle from a rooftop with binoculars. After Hinokage is declared the winner, Shiranui decides it is finally her turn, once Kumagawa comes back. On August twenty-second, the Student Council and Class -13 gather for the final battle. Shiranui declares that Kumagawa will represent Class -13. As Tokemichi Choujabaru protests, Shiranui reveals she has received authority from his superior Kiruko Tachiarai, explaining she spent the past month winning over the Election Management Committee chairwoman. As Shiranui moves out of the way, she and Zenkichi share a smile. Shiranui is impressed by the conditions Medaka sets for the match. Shiranui and the other members of Class -13 climb onto the rooftop Medaka and Kumagawa are fighting on. Shiranui watches as the battle devolves into a punching fest. Questioned by Youka Naze if the arrival of Medaka's enemies to cheer for her is her doing, Shiranui answers in the negative. When a smiling Kumagawa forfeits, Shiranui is unsurprised.
Kurokami Medaka's Successor Arc
After the Treasure Hunt event ended, Najimi Ajimu reveals to Zenkichi's allys including Shiranui that she planned to have the Student Council Candidates replace Hitoyoshi in Medaka's heart or so she says. Shiranui watches silently over Zenkichi's conversation with Anshin'in. At the Peace Plan meeting at Ghost Babel, Hitoyoshi finally meets his allies. When he sees Shiranui, he smiles with relief, knowing that his best friend is here with him. Shiranui blushes, saying that he is useless without her.
Jet Black Bride Arc
When Medaka gathers teammates with which to fight her suitors, Shiranui (in a hoodie and overalls) is one of the people she chooses. Her promised reward is a full Manchu Han Imperial Feast. Later, the All Jokers meet Bukiko Udou on the aircraft carrier Black, the stage for the second Jet Black Wedding Feast. They follow Udou into the ship, with Medaka explaining to her teammates about her situation. Shiranui is surprised by the appearance of Kairai Kugurugi. Shiranui listens on as Udou explains the rules. As Medaka prepares to fight her suitors herself, she is stopped by Shiranui and the others, Shiranui telling her that telling them not to fight only makes them want to fight more. Shiranui is surprised by Ajimu's easy defeat of the six suitors, and the revelation that the six she just defeated are actually only doubles. She makes no comment as the suitors declare their intent to defeat the doubles as well. When Medaka is offered the chance to learn the identity of Fukurou Tsurubami's murderer, Shiranui advises her to decline the offer. Medaka accepts even so, surprising Shiranui. Along with the rest of the All Jokers, she is sealed into a card by the smallest suitor. Shiranui is shown still trapped within Momo Momozono's name card during the Jet Black Wedding Feast's final round of "Delete Shiritori". Shiranui is present when Zenkichi is healed. Together, the Student Council and the All Jokers (and Namanie Nienami) return to Hakoniwa Academy.
Unknown Shiranui Arc
After the Jet Black Wedding Feast ended, Shiranui told Kumagawa that Medaka did not need her anymore, and that her job was done. Kajiki ordered to her leave Hakoniwa Academy, as her assignment was finished. Before doing so, Shiranui asked Kumagawa to use his All Fiction to erase all memories and records of her time there.. At the Shiranui Village, Shiranui eats little and asks Shinkirou Kotobuki to take the food back; explaining she only ate lots of food before because of Medaka's previous restriction on eating meat. Genjitsu Momozono informs Shiranui that Medaka and the others from the academy are at the entrance of the village. Shiranui drinks her tea, voicing her surprise that All Fiction failed. When Shinkirou points out how useless Zenkichi was during the Jet Black Wedding Feast and that Shiranui was the true supporter of Medaka, Shiranui splashes her tea on Shinkirou. Emotionless, Shiranui apologizes, saying that she seems to be still in character. She excuses herself to cool off. As Shiranui stares out into a garden, Obi comes up and congratulates her on a job well done. Shiranui is surprised that Obi has not retired yet. Obi gives Shiranui her next assignment, from their master Kajiki. Shiranui states no job could be more difficult than shadowing Medaka, but is completely shocked and amused upon reading her orders. Obi asks Shiranui what to do concerning Medaka and the others. Shiranui doubts Medaka will be fooled by the notice board, but doubts she will be able to reach the village, as the path is blocked by the Gate Guardians "Doppelgangers". Describing Medaka's group, Shiranui labels one as strong, one as weak, and one that lives too long. She begins to say the fourth is kind, but instead changes the description to too optimistic. She adds further that the Shiranui Village is a nest of doubles, and that the ones stalling the group from the academy will be themselves. In preparation for her new role, Shiranui's clothes are changed by several maids. Shiranui nonchalantly states that, even for Medaka, fighting your doppelganger is like trying to catch sea lights on the open seas.
When the Hakoniwa students arrive, Shiranui, now wearing a dress, greets them apathetically. She goes on to pretend not to remember them, claiming she forgets quickly about unimportant things. In the face of Medaka's response, Shiranui drops the act. Questioned by Zenkichi if all she did was simply part of her job, she responds in the affirmative, and goes on to explain she only became his friend to get close to Medaka. Shiranui goes on to question Kumagawa as to why Zenkichi still has his memories. When Medaka asks if Shiranui's true feelings are that she desired to be pursued, Shiranui laughs, before revealing that she always hated everything about Hakoniwa Academy. After expressing her true feelings, Shiranui tearfully begs Kumagawa to erase her memories, only to become more distraught after he tells her he cannot. After Kumagawa explains to Shiranui that her feelings are still with Hakoniwa Academy, Zenkichi asks if she cannot return at least for the third semester, so that she can say a proper farewell. Shiranui smiles sadly and tells him she has to stay in the village. She begins to explain about the darkness sealed away, before being interrupted by Iihiko. The giant breaks through the wall behind Shiranui, sending her flying into another wall, where she drops to the floor unmoving. When Medaka acquiesces to Ajimu's order to flee, she takes everyone else in the room with her, including Shiranui.
As Medaka carries the group to Ajimu's jeep, Shiranui regains consciousness. She tells Medaka that as long as she is with the group, Iihiko will continue to come after them. Shiranui tells Medaka to run. She explains to Medaka that things damaged by Iihiko do not heal, and that her wounded arm will never recover. Shiranui looks away when Iihiko breaks Medaka's torso. Shiranui begs Iihiko to stop beating Medaka, only for Obi to remind her that all that has happened is her fault, as she still holds attachments to Hakoniwa Academy. Shiranui asks Obi to stop Iihiko, promising to remain in the village forever. She is shocked when Medaka halts Iihiko's beating on her own, and is stunned to silence when Medaka thanks her for all that she has done. With the arrival of the members of the Thirteen Party, Shiranui explains who they are to Obi and Kairai. As each Abnormal attacks Iihiko, Shiranui explains their abilities to the evermore amazed pair behind her. When Iihiko is knocked off the mountain by an armored truck, Shiranui gets on board with the others. Smiling, she chooses to jump off however to prevent Iihiko from following. She tells Medaka that they could have been best friends, if they each had been different people. Iihiko catches Shiranui as she falls, reminding her that her body is precious to him as well. Back at the village proper, Shiranui and Obi are redressed, Obi commenting that they will need to use makeup to cover Shiranui's wounds. A blank eyed Shiranui apologizes to Obi for forcing her to use Iihiko, even though Zenkichi and Kumagawa most likely will not recover.
A short time later, Kairai and Shinkirou transport Shiranui to her next workplace. Shiranui assures Shinkirou that she will do her job, to keep herself distracted from her injuries. Shiranui opens up the scroll detailing her mission, the contents of which include the name Fukurou Tsurubami. The three arrive at the ruins of Hakoniwa General Hospital to meet Fukurou. Kairai questions whether Fukurou will really be waiting for them, though Shiranui quiets his concerns. She goes on to explain the history of the hospital and the Tsurubami family, as well as Hato Tsurubami in particular. Arriving at the director's office, she tells her escorts they can leave her. However both Kairai and Shinkirou insist on staying; Shiranui comments that they are nice guys. Upon entering however, all three are trapped in a cage. Greeted by Fukurou, Shiranui calls him a dandy, and notes he seems too alive to be dead. Shiranui is startled when Fukurou uses his styles to kill Shinkirou and seal his body in a name card. She explains her research to Fukurou as his double, though is quieted when he points out she missed his sister complex. She is shocked when Fukurou offers her her favorite candy, having researched her himself. Shiranui is sickened when Fukurou proposes to her. Listening to his story, she is horrified to realize he is only pursuing her because she was Medaka's double. Overwhelmed, Shiranui wonders why her life is turning her into a Minus; even in this situation, she can still manage to smile. She is pulled out of her depression however when she realizes Medaka has arrived at the hospital. With Medaka's arrival, Shiranui correctly deduces why the other girl has come. She asks that Fukurou keep Medaka away however, not wanting a repeat of the previous day with Iihiko. Shiranui tries to sort out her feelings towards Medaka, realizing that she has lied so much, even she is not sure just what the truth is.
In some hallway, Zenkichi and the others get lost, but find Shiranui waiting for them. Shiranui notices Medaka is not present, and is glad that Kakegae Yuzuriha restrained Medaka. Zenkichi is shocked, asking if Shiranui was the one who sent Yuzuriha after them. Shiranui tells Zenkichi to be quiet, since she is trying to speak with Kumagawa. Shiranui asks Kumagawa to betray Medaka and side with herself to end the situation. She also adds open front hooded-sweatshirts, and asks him to get along with her, as a fellow Minus. After Kumagawa erases Zenkichi, an outraged Shiranui furiously demands what he has done. Shiranui notices her feelings, and covers her mouth in surprise. Shiranui pulls out her eating utensils, and reveals her Real Eater, asking Kumagawa if he really thought he could win. She states that this is the first time she has realized there are some people not worth talking to in this world. Shiranui thinks over Kumagawa's likely strategy - not fighting seriously and getting Shiranui herself to use Real Eater on his All Fiction to reverse Zenkichi's disappearance. She also knows that reversing All Fiction will allow Kumagawa to bring back the Hakoniwa Academy students' memories of Shiranui. Believing herself to have figured out Kumagawa's scheme, Shiranui lunges at Kumagawa. Kumagawa dodges, but is surprised, stating his belief that she was supposed to be weak Shiranui readies her utensils and sends them at Kumagawa, stating that she is weak, but that she can eat strong ones - giant eating. Despite many attacks by Shiranui, Kumagawa has dodged everything by a hair's width and looks almost fine. Regretful of this wide difference in combat experience, Shiranui tells Kumagawa to stand still, since he wants her to use Real Eater on him. Shiranui clenches her teeth in annoyance at his response, but calms herself down. She tells him that she will add rules to his All Fiction to prevent him from reversing the memories at Hakoniwa and she will use his actions as an excuse to drive away Medaka and Zenkichi. Ending the conversation, Shiranui jumps at Kumagawa, using a corkscrew to stick to the ceiling. With Kumagawa caught off guard, Shiranui drops down to elbow him in the face. Kumagawa falls backwards and is pierced by his own screws. Shiranui takes Kumagawa's head and prepares to use her Real Eater on him.
Before she can use Real Eater, the screw piercing Kumagawa grows and stabs Shiranui as well. Stunned, Shiranui realizes all the screws on the floor are Book Maker screws. The other screws disappear as the screw in Shiranui transforms into a full Book Maker screw. Shiranui, still shaken by Book Maker, says that Kumagawa cannot reverse Zenkichi's disappearance if he keeps Book Maker on her. Shiranui tells herself that Kumagawa is bluffing and is just waiting for her to beg him. Despite knowing this, Shiranui still tearfully pleads for Zenkichi's revival. Kumagawa stops her, saying that begging is useless, thinking she is lying. Accepting her just desserts and apologizing to Zenkichi, Shiranui prepares for Kumagawa's attack. Zenkichi appears and stops Kumagawa's screws. He explains how he returned, before Shiranui throws herself on him. She tearfully apologizes for everything that has happened and asks to be saved. Zenkichi smiles and hugs her back. Shiranui and Zenkichi prepare to beat up Kumagawa, but are interrupted by his cell phone. The caller is Obi, who, after Kumagawa hands the phone over to Shiranui, warns them that Iihiko is on the way. Shiranui arrives at Fukurou's office with Zenkichi and Kumagawa, staying close to Zenkichi. She is shocked to see Fukurou's death with the arrival of Iihiko, taking it as proof that even styles will not work on Iihiko. When Iihiko turns his attention to Shiranui, Zenkichi, Kumagawa, and Nienami move to defend her.
Shiranui is surprised by Medaka's appearance. She is amazed when Medaka manages to punch Iihiko, but explains that even attacks are broken when they are used against Iihiko. Shiranui recognizes Medaka's choice of a one hit battle, and recognizes her preparation for her strongest Kurokami Phantom. Shiranui is horrified when Medaka falls. Shiranui and the others form a circle around Medaka's corpse. She is amazed when Medaka regains consciousness and rises to her feet. Shiranui tearfully begs Medaka to stop, but is touched when Medaka refuses. Shiranui and the others cheer on Medaka as she launches herself at Iihiko. She is surprised like everyone else by Medaka's clone gambit. When Iihiko dodges, Shiranui is appalled. She is shocked when Medaka strikes Iihiko from behind. After Iihiko falls, Shiranui hugs Medaka. Before the other girl can return the gesture, Shiranui stabs her through the stomach, revealing she has been possessed by Iihiko. Still possessed, Shiranui's body is used by Iihiko to destroy the hospital and attack Medaka and her friends. Iihiko continues to use Shiranui's body to fight Yuzuriha mimicking Nienami. Iihiko stares down Zenkichi before attacking him. As Zenkichi moves to attack, Iihiko switches out with Shiranui for a split-second, forcing Zenkichi to stop. Iihiko prepares to finish Zenkichi, but finds himself unable to move. Zenkichi reveals that his plan was always to bring Shiranui back in control. Finding his fist pointed at himself, a panicked Iihiko tells Shiranui that he is too rare of an existence to destroy. Shiranui pays him no heed however, and punches him in the face, destroying Iihiko's spirit.
Shiranui regains consciousness. Believing everyone else to be dead, she begins to cry, but is stopped by the appearance of Medaka. Shiranui is shocked to learn that Iihiko's damage became reversible with his defeat, and that Medaka healed everyone with the Five Forks. Shiranui prepares to thank her friends, but is interrupted by Kumagawa's phone. Overhearing the conversation, she is stunned to find out the moon is falling towards Earth. When Medaka declares her intention to stop the moon at the cost of her own life, a distraught Shiranui tries to stop her, but is knocked out by Kumagawa. At the end of the academic year, Shiranui is among the students present at the Hakoniwa Academy graduation ceremony. She is shocked by Medaka's return. She joins her friends for a group photo after the ceremony ends.
Bouquet Toss To The Future Arc
Shiranui hears that Medaka is leaving the academy from Tsurubami. She shows up in the Student Council's office to vent, promising to stop Medaka with all her strength. As the Student Council ponder how to convince Medaka to stay, they are interrupted by their faculty advisor, Messhi Kuguhara. He warns them against trying to force Medaka, which Zenkichi grudgingly accepts. Shiranui becomes embarrassed when Zenkichi brings up her earlier behavior. Shiranui confronts Medaka as part of the 100 Flowers Run, along with Iihiko and the rest of the Shiranui family. After Medaka defeats the other members of the Shiranui family, Shiranui moves in with her Real Eater. Medaka whispers something in her ear however, and Shiranui lets her pass. Asked by Obi what Medaka said, Shiranui tells Obi that Medaka asked her to enjoy her youth. Her message to Medaka is an I love you. Come April of the new school year, Shiranui is present at the entrance ceremony for Zenkichi's speech and the introduction of the new chair. She is shocked to see the academy's new chairwoman is none other than Medaka.
Ten years later, Shiranui reunites with her friends on the tenth anniversary of Ajimu's disappearance. Changing in the Student Council office with the other women, she is startled by the sudden arrival of Zenkichi and Kamome Tsurubami. As an aftereffect of having succeeded Iihiko, Shiranui still looks the same after ten years. Having taken over the Shiranui Village from Obi, Shiranui opened it to the public as a ninja village. Shiranui is one of the few who can still use her Minus. She eats some meat.
Superhuman Physiology: Shiranui's grandfather originally saw her as the foundation for Class -13. This position is ultimately taken by Kumagawa, who recognizes the similarities between Shiranui and himself. Shiranui was also able to come out of attacks by both Shibushi and Chougasaki unscathed. Zenkichi notes that Shiranui cannot fight, and is probably weaker than a beetle; despite this, he has never seen her lose.
Real Eater (正喰者, Rearu Ītā): A skill that allows Shiranui to eat and alter the properties of other skills. After using Real Eater on Hinokage, his power skill, Unknown Hero, was changed into the speed skill, Theme Song. After using Real Eater on Zenkichi, his skill that let him perceive the world as others see it, Parasite Seeing, was changed into a skill that let him perceive his own limits, Model Zenkichi. Real Eater also has the ability to add rules to skills; Shiranui stated she could change Kumagawa's All Fiction from being a skill that cannot be reversed to being a skill where only its most previous use could be reversed. As Hanten is the holder of the skill that makes skills, Shiranui is the back up most similar to him. Ajimu labeled Real Eater as the most disgusting skill in the world, and with her death, Real Eater now surpasses all others. Real Eater has no weaknesses, but only if it can be used. Shiranui claims that her Minus isn't very convenient to use, and calls the process of using it on other people "lending" it to them.
